What Is Darts Average?

Darts average tells the average scored points a player achieves per dart or per 3 darts. This is a very good metric to show how that player is performing based on the total scored points and the number of thrown darts.

Ideally, you would want to increase your darts averages gradually over time, which indicates you’re improving in darts.

Please note that for the majority of players, when they say “darts average”, it normally refers to a 3-dart average. But many others also use “darts average” for a 1-dart average. In this blog, we will cover both cases.

How to Calculate Your Darts Average

This section explains how you can calculate your darts averages manually. You can always turn to our online and free calculator to see these metrics.

How to Calculate a 1-dart Average

1-dart average refers to the average score a player achieves per a single dart thrown, which equals the metric of Point per dart. Here’s how you calculate it:

1-dart average= (301/501/701/1001 – the remaining score) / the number of darts thrown

For example, if you play 501 darts, and you finish a leg in 10 darts. Then:

  • Your remaining score is 0
  • The number of darts thrown is 10
  • And your 1-dart average is (501 – 0) / 10 = 50.10

Example 2, you play 501 darts, your opponent finishes a leg in 10 darts, and you lose with only 9 darts thrown and the remaining score of 141. Your 1-dart average is (501 – 141) / 9 = 40.

How to Calculate a 3-dart Average

When talking about “darts average”, people usually refer to a 3-dart average. Here’s the formula:

3-dart average = [(301/501/701/1001 – the remaining score) / the number of darts thrown] x 3

For example, if you play 501 darts, and you finish a leg in 10 darts. Then:

  • Your remaining score is 0
  • The number of darts thrown is 10
  • And your 3-dart average is [(501 – 0) / 10] x 3 = 150.30

Example 2, you play 501 darts, your opponent finishes a leg in 10 darts, and you lose with only 9 darts thrown and the remaining score of 141. Your 3-dart average is [(501 – 141) / 9] x 3 = 120.

Good Darts Average

So what is a good 3-dart average? Or 1-dart average? Here’s our reference, which we categorize into two groups: casual players and professionals.

For casual players, a good darts average is from 40 to 60+. Meanwhile, for the professionals, it’s somewhere between 90 and 110 or more.

The First 9 Dart Average

The first 9-dart average is the average scored points of a player for their first 9 darts of a leg. You will usually see this metric in many big pro competitions.

Here’s how you calculate it:

The first 9 dart average = (Total number of points scored in the first 9 darts / 9)

Highest Dart Average in the World

Over the years, some of the world’s best darts players have achieved astonishing dart averages, with some even setting new records. Here are the two highest:
