Rules to Play 420 Darts Game
Here are the rules to play the 420 darts game. You can play by yourself or with other players.
Objective
Each player will have 420 by default. The objective of this game is to bring your score down to 0 or less than 0. Whoever does this first will win.
In case you play by yourself, to win the challenge, you must do this (dropping 420 points to 0 or less) within the maximum number of rounds or thrown darts, which we will discuss right after.
Rounds and targets
You will only throw at the doubles, following the ascending numerical order. Begin with double 1 in round 1, double 2 in round 2, double 3 in round 3, all the way to the double 20 in round 20, and finally the bullseye for the last round.
In each round, you will have 3 darts to throw at the corresponding double. After you throw 3 darts, regardless each of them hits or misses the target, you will move on to the next round and the next double.
For example, in round 1, you hit, hit, miss. You move on to round 2, you miss all 3 darts at double 2. You move on to round 3 and double 3, you miss, miss, hit. You move on to round 4 and the game just continues like this.
So, there will be 21 rounds maximum, and 63 darts thrown maximum.
Scoring
As you already know, a double is worth double the points. Every time you hit a double, subtract the scored points from your total 420 or the remaining points.
For example:
- In round 1, you throw at the double 1, you hit, hit, miss. You got 4 points. Your score is now 420 – 4 = 416.
- You move on to round 2 and double 2, you miss all 3 darts. You got 0 points. Your score remains 416 – 0 = 416.
- You move on to round 3 and double 3, you miss, miss, hit. You got 6 points. Your score is now 416 – 6 = 410.
- The game continues until you bring your score to 0 or until the end of the last round (round 21 with the bullseye as the target). If the last round ends but you haven’t brought your score down to 0 or less, you lose.

In your second game, you do this again but with 51 thrown darts. In your third game, you do this again but with 49 darts only.
