Know the Traveling Path of Darts

To throw darts with high precision, it is important to understand the trajectory that the darts will take. Most of the time, darts travel in a curved path toward the board.

There are many factors that affect the trajectory of darts. Among these, the following are the most important:

  • The distance between you and the dartboard
  • Your height in relation to the dartboard
  • The type of dart being used
  • The speed and spin of darts
  • The wind if you’re playing outside
  • The point of release when throwing a dart

When throwing a dart, you should understand and expect these. Make small adjustments until you can get the right feeling of throwing a dart at the right target.

Get the Right Stance to Throw Darts

Getting the stance right is the starting point to throwing darts with precision.

When throwing a dart, you should be in a stable stance. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart before the throwing line. Face the dartboard with your dominant foot forward. Keep your back straight. From here, you can make small adjustments to your stance until you feel comfortable and balanced.

Your non-throwing arm should be relaxed at your side. If you’re right-handed, then your right hand and foot should be at the front and your left arm will rest at your side. The same goes for the lefties.

You can use a mirror or a camera to check and see if you’re in the correct position.

Hold a Dart Correctly

Now that you know the stance for throwing darts, it’s time to learn how to hold a dart correctly. This is important because how you hold a dart will affect its trajectory or its traveling path.

There are three main ways to hold a dart:

  • The first way is to hold the dart between your thumb and first two fingers
  • The second way is to hold the dart like how you would hold a pencil
  • The third way is to hold the dart between your thumb and first finger, with your middle finger touching the dart just to support

Which of these ways is the best? It really depends on what feels comfortable for you. Experiment with each grip/finger placement and see which one works best for you.

Remember when holding a dart, you should apply pressure evenly to all sides of the dart. You don’t want to grip the dart too tightly because it will affect how you throw it. Relax your hand and use enough pressure to hold the dart securely.

Learn Right Technique to Throw Darts with Precision

Now that you know how to stand and hold a dart, it’s time to learn the proper technique on how to throw a dart with precision.

Keep Your Elbow Up

When throwing a dart, you want to make sure that your elbow is up. This will help with the accuracy and precision of your throw.

If your elbow is too low, it will cause the dart to go off course. If your elbow is too high, it will make it difficult to aim at the target.

The right way is to keep your elbow at a 90-degree angle. This will give you more control over the dart and help you throw with precision.

Aim

Elbow up, then hold the dart up to your eye level. Put your eyes, the dart, and the target in the same line.

Many beginners, as an instinct, close one eye and aim with the other. Although it may give a comfortable feeling, rarely a professional does this.

Without both eyes open you lose your depth perception and it makes it very difficult to throw accurately. Never look at your dart, look past it at the board with both eyes. Focus on your target.

Pull Back and Accelerate

Keep your whole body still and stable. You’ll throw with mainly your hand, wrist, and forearm.

Before throwing the dart, pull back your hand slightly. How far of pulling back depends on personal preference. So, practice and decide what angle is the right one for you.

Your elbow will act as an anchor for your forearm to start moving forward. During this motion, let your arm move naturally without dropping the dart.

Release the Dart

As you release the dart, you should snap your wrist forward. Imagine like you’re creating a final little push for the dart to hit the target. Remember to snap your wrist forward naturally. Don’t go against the natural flow of your motion, like snapping downward, it would ruin the way you want the dart to travel.

At first, it can be hard to practice or get a feel of the right wrist snap. But eventually, it will come with enough practice and attention.

Follow Through

After releasing the dart, your arm should continue to follow the motion until the end when your fingers point to the target. After that, put your arm down, see whether the dart hits the right target, and then make small adjustments for the next throw if needed.
